West Suffolk Hospital

Chapel & Multi Faith Room

In 1968 it was decided that the original Chapel on this site was too small to accommodate safely the patients and staff who wished to attend Sunday Worship. A scheme was agreed to extend the old Chapel by creating a sanctuary area.

At the same time the Scanner Appeal was launched and it became clear that the new Scanner should be housed in the old Chapel, it being situated next door to the X-ray Department. The present site was then chosen to house the new Chapel and work began in June 1988.

Originally a courtyard, the design attempts to recreate this feeling of openness combined with an underlying sense of security. The round sanctuary area takes off the squareness and the use of stone provides a sense of permanence amid the constant change and challenge of hospital life.

The Font and Memorial (set into the Sanctuary floor) came from the Chapel on the St Mary's Hospital site and from the old Chapel of St Saviour at the old West Suffolk Hospital site.

The Candlesticks, Flower Stand, Aumbrey Door and Relief on rear Sanctuary wall were cast by a local artist, Mr. Geoffrey Clarke RA. of Hartest who has also completed work for Coventry and Chichester Cathedrals.

The small stained glass window set into the corridor wall to the right of the Chapel entrance depicts the Parable of the Good Samaritan. It originally came from the Chapel at the old West Suffolk Hospital site, being the only piece of stained glass to survive a bomb blast during World War 11. It was framed by the West Suffolk Nurses League.

The Chapel was built by donations from the West Suffolk Heath Authority, the West Suffolk Hospital League of Friends, the Scanner Appeal and local Churches.

In 2004 further developments led to the provision of a Multi Faith Room. All staff, patients and visitors may use the Room or the Chapel for prayer and quiet reflection. Alternatively, you may choose to sit in the garden. We hope that you may find God's peace and presence here.

Prayers are said daily in the Chapel. If you would like a particular person or situation included in these prayers, please give brief details on the 'Prayer Request' forms provided.
