CHAPLAINCY & PASTORAL CARE

Be patient

Let nothing disturb you,
nothing alarm you:
while all things fade away
God is unchanging
and you will gain everything:
for with God in your heart
nothing is lacking,
God meets your every need.

Christian: St Teresa of Avila

You and Only You

I will sing you a song
0 Lord of the Universe.
I will sing you a song.
Where can You be found,
And where can You not be found?
Where I pass - there You are.
Where I remain there, too, You are
You, You and only You.

Jewish: Hasidic song

Your Hand in Darkness

As the rain hides the stars, as the autumn mist hides the hills, as the clouds veil the blue of the sky, so the dark happenings of my lot hide the shining of your face from me. Yet, if I may hold your hand in the darkness, it is enough. Since I know that, though I may stumble in my going, you do not fall

A Celtic prayer

Glory to Him

0 You who art described though no description reaches your True Being nor does any delineator draw limits for You ... You who are absent in mystery yet not lost, You Seer who art not seen, You who are sought and found, for neither the heavens nor the earth nor the intervening space is void of You for the flicker of an eyelid ...

You are the Light of Light and Lord of Lords, encompassing all things. Glory to Him whom nothing resembles, the all-Hearer, the all-Seer. Glory to Him who is thus and no other is thus.

Muslim Devotions

Contrary Ways

What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow: our life is the creation of our mind.
If a man speaks or acts with an impure mind, suffering follows him as the wheel of the cart follows the beast that draws the cart.
What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow: our life is the creation of our mind.
If a man speaks or acts with a pure mind, joy follows him as his own shadow.

Buddhist: The Dhammapada

The Path of Life

There is no room for God in a man who is full of himself.

Jewish: Hasidic

The Living Self

The living self is the image of the Supreme Being.
It is neither old nor a child;
Neither it suffers pain, nor in death's snare is caught;
It is not shattered nor dies;
In all time it is pervasive.
It feels not heat nor cold;
Neither has it friend nor foe;
It feels not joy nor sorrow:
All its own; to it belongs all might.
It has neither father nor mother;
Beyond the limits of matter has it ever existed,
Of sin and goodness it feels not the touch-
Within the heart of each being it is ever awake.
0 Lord, Thou art the glory of all kings, The flag bearer of true faith,
Beyond grief and sorrow,
Thou dost adorn and sustain the universe.

A Sikh prayer

Serenity Prayer

God, grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Christian: Reinhold Niebuhr

Morning prayer

The Lord Protector of all, Self-existent - All Knowing. All Bliss. The Creator of the Universe, Is worthy of our Choice. May we meet this Divine Grace? With His wisdom may we be inspired.

Hindu

Pain, the Sister of Joy

I thank Thee for Pain,
the sister of Joy.
I thank Thee for Sorrow,
the twin of Happiness
Pain, Joy, Sorrow, Happiness.
Four angels at work on the well on Love.
Pain and Sorrow dig it deep with aches.
Joy and Happiness fill it up with tears that come with smiles.
For the seasons of emotion in my heart,
I thank you, 0 Lord.

Hindu Prayer: Chandran Devanasen

You Are My Healing

Thy name is my healing, 0 my God,
and remembrance of Thee is my Remedy.
Nearness to Thee is my hope,
and love for Thee is my companion.
Thy mercy to me is my healing and
my succour
in both this world and the world to come.
Thou, verily, art
the All-Bountiful,
the All-Knowing,
the All-Wise.

Baha'i Prayer: Baha'u'lIah

Buddhist Blessing

May all Blessings be yours,
May all gods protect you.
By the power of all that is highest and best in you
May all Happiness be yours.

Adaptation of Jayamangala Gatha
