Chaplaincy Guidelines for
On-Call Faith Leaders

Service offered

This service enables patients and their families/carers to request the care and support of their own faith community, by means of a visit from one of their own faith leaders. They may do this by themselves contacting a faith leader in the community already known to them. In the event that they do not have such a contact this service enables the QE Hospital Trust to make a referral for them.

This is normally a service offered within weekday working hours, and routine (non-urgent) referrals should be made in these times. In the event of an urgent need out of hours, at weekends or on bank holidays, the service is also available. Urgent calls should be responded to within 60 minutes.

Christian Clergy On-Call Arrangements:

Church of England / Free Church :

•  Called by Switchboard or Wards

•  During Mon to Fri 9-5: Whole-Time Chaplains

•  Out of hours/weekends/bank holidays: Either Whole-Time Chaplains or local clergy list

Roman Catholic Chaplains:

•  Called by Switchboard

•  Service maintained by RC Sessional Chaplains and local clergy

Other Faith Leaders On-Call Arrangements:

•  During Mon to Fri 9-5: called by Whole-Time Chaplains

•  Out of hours/weekends/bank holidays: called by Switchboard

All faith leaders called out by the QEH Trust act as representatives of the hospital and agree to abide by its policies and procedures. In particular:

•  On-call faith leaders are sponsored by their own faith organisation/community and supply an appropriate support reference to this effect.

•  On-call faith leaders supply another reference from a professional of good standing within the community.

•  On-call faith leaders are registered as QEH Chaplaincy Volunteers which includes Occupational Health clearance. They are supplied with an identity badge and a parking permit if appropriate.

•  On-call faith leaders respect and follow the QEH confidentiality policy in relation to patients and their families and friends.

•  No money can by received by on-call faith leaders in return for the service offered, except in relation to expenses incurred. Any donations go to the QE Hospital Trust.

•  On-call faith leaders are either permanent residents of the UK or have a UK work permit.

•  On-call faith leaders are able to communicate clearly in English and, if different, in their own language.

•  On-call faith leaders are accountable for their work in the hospital to the Head of Chaplaincy Services.

•  When called out to a ward, on-call faith leaders make their presence known to the staff in charge. They should wear their identity badge.

•  On-call faith leaders then report to the Head of Chaplaincy basic details of calls received and visits made, (i.e. time, ward, name of patient).

•  On-call faith leaders inform the Head of Chaplaincy of any changes in their availability, address, telephone number etc.

I agree to work within the QEH Trust policies and the Chaplaincy Guidelines for on-call faith leaders
