JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE : Hindu Chaplain

GRADE :

HOURS Part-time (one session)

LOCATION : Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak Hospitals

ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Accountable to : Chaplaincy Team Leader

JOB SUMMARY:

To participate in the spiritual and religious care of patients, their families, and staff, especially Hindus, within the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. With the Chaplaincy Team and other staff, to make provision for the religious and spiritual needs of patients, their families and staff. To make particular provision for the religious and spiritual care of Hindus in the hospitals.
  2. To pay regular visits to wards and units, in order to make him/herself available to patients, relatives and staff, especially those who are seriously ill or bereaved.
  3. To ensure the availability of Hindu literature in chapels and prayer rooms, and to facilitate opportunities for Hindu worship in those places and elsewhere in the hospitals.
  4. Within the limitations of the one-session post, to respond out-of-hours to emergency calls from Hindu patients/families.
  5. To participate in the recruitment, training and support of Chaplaincy Volunteer Ward Visitors.
  6. To contribute, within the limits of the one session, to Chaplaincy Team Meetings and other appropriate meetings and training events.
  7. To provide leadership in the Trust regarding key issues and appropriate resources for the spiritual care of Hindu patients and staff.
  8. To participate in staff training in relation to religious, cultural and ethical issues.
  9. To maintain contact with Hindu communities in the city of Birmingham.
  10. To maintain and develop his/her own personal and professional development.
  11. To monitor service developments and keep accurate records for the purpose of future planning.

This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of responsibilities but more an outline framework against which the post-holder and manager will have flexibility to develop and define the detail of the work undertaken.

Good standard of general education, preferably with university degree

Other professional/vocational qualifications desirable, e.g. teaching, interpreting, advocacy, counselling community development, religious studies

Good communication skills

Good interpersonal skills

Compassion

Knowledge of at least one S Asian or W Asian language (in addition to English)

Ability to work with people of all faiths as part of a multi-faith team

Knowledge

Knowledge of and ability to communicate Hindu scripture and tradition, especially re. health issues.

In good standing within a Hindu community.

Experience

Work in NHS or other caring profession or in bereavement care.

There is a one-session vacancy for a Hindu chaplain at the Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak Hospitals. The successful applicant will join an ecumenical and multi-faith team of 10, and approximately 50 volunteer ward visitors.

Applicants must be in good standing within a Hindu community, have knowledge of and ability to communicate Hindu scripture and tradition, have a good general education, experience of work within the NHS or other caring profession, and knowledge of at least one Asian language in addition to English. They must have good listening and interpersonal skills.
