IntroductionThe Chaplaincy Department includes Chaplains of the world faiths with sizeable communities in Leicester. These include Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism and various Christian denominations. We provide religious, spiritual and pastoral care to patients, visitors and staff of all faiths or no faith. All members of the Department work collaboratively with those of different traditions and faiths. "Spiritual" does not mean the same thing as "Religious". Patients do not have to feel they are a "religious" person or be a regular worshipper to make use of our services. Coming into hospital for any sort of investigation or treatment, or visiting somebody who is in pain or distressed, can raise all kinds of questions, anxieties and fears. Patients may find it would be helpful to share these feelings with someone who is not actively involved in their medical treatment and care, but who has experience of hospitals and the effects they can have on people. Chaplains are always ready and willing to listen in confidence and are trained to help patients in their search to understand and make sense of what is happening to them. Our main aim as chaplains is to help care for patients and, as far as possible, to help them find that sense of inner peace which is such an important part of the healing process.
Patient SupportThe chaplains of various major faiths regularly visit the wards and are always happy to see patients or visitors, to offer a "listening ear". They are also available to pray with a patient, or offer them religious support according to their faith. There are also a number of voluntary Chaplaincy Visitors who visit patients. If you would like a member of the Chaplaincy to visit a patient in hospital please contact the appropriate team leader by phone or e-mail. We will pass their name to the appropriate member of the team. We can also help make contact with someone of a patient's own faith or denomination, if there is not an appropriate person within the team. If you wish to request a chaplain to visit a patient in an emergency, at any time of the day or night, please ask a member of the nursing staff to contact the chaplain who is on-call. Please make clear the faith of the patient. Site based teamsEach hospital site has its own team of Chaplains and volunteer Pastoral Visitors. The principal point of contact for each team is the team leader for each site: Leicester General Hospital
